Honey Do List

Top 5 Honey Do List Categories

There are a lot of honey-do projects and just simple every day to do’s. It can be a hard line distinguishing what is different between a honey project, or a honey-do task. In fact, it is probably a very personal thing for most.  That being said here is how we have decided it is best to categorize common honey-do list items:

  • Home Improvement
  • Home Maintenance
  • Home Management
  • Errands
  • Family Well Being

Here is a little bit more of why we have broken our honey-do tasks into these honey-do categories.

Home Improvement

This is what most people probably think of when it comes to a honey-do list, big projects that require a lot of time and money. Although home improvements, remodels and additions are at the top of the list most couples are only working on one or two if these projects at a time unless they are moving or flipping a home. These projects although big are generally one and done projects that require a lot of time and resources upfront. Jokes and honey-do list memes usually depict these projects as things that almost seem impossible to do, or are on the list forever because they never get done. By reinventing your honey-do list and creating a process that works for you we hope these big projects actually get taken care of.

Here are just a few examples of what projects might be under this list:

  • Renovating the kitchen
  • Electrical work
  • Landscaping
  • Plumbing
  • Painting
  • Interior design and more

Home Maintenance

These projects are probably the most common items on a couple’s honey-do list. This category contains tasks such as: Mowing the lawn, doing the dishes, cleaning the bathroom, and I am sure we could list much more. These tasks are usually the joke of the never-ending list. Although most are small there are lots of them and at times it can seem daunting to get everything done.   By our definition, these are generally routine tasks the keep the items in the house working, clean and in proper function. The key for us is that these tasks also need to be done regularly. For some winterizing, the house for bugs may be a seasonal task, for others, it might be a big home improvement project depending on what needs to be done. In our mind this is home maintenance like most seasonal tasks, however, it is more important how you and your partner categorize them.

Here are just a few examples of projects that would call into these categories

  • Seasonal tasks
  • Small repairs
  • Cleaning
  • Organizing shelves or rooms
  • Taking out the trash

Errands

Everything we have talked about thus far is things that can be done around the house, but just as important as things are the house are the things that can’t be done at home. In fact after planning all of the big projects we consider planning on the things that need to get done outside of the home.

A big part of this section is just listing and priortizing these items so when you get into home management you can decide what to do with the available time you have. Here are some examples of some common errands.

  • Rotating the tires
  • Picking up kids from school
  • Grocery shopping
  • Going to the bank / paying bills

Home Management

This section covers items that are regularly talked about, but maybe only would make it on a couple’s traditional honey-do list and more on their to-do list.  In our mind planning is key and although just doing home maintenance projects and home improvements as they come up are good we feel in our relationships we get more done and we are generally happier when we have a plan, and when things go according to plan. Which in all honesty the usually don’t, but it is a lot easier to pivot and be on the same page when something unexpected comes up.

We feel this category can be broken down a little more into the following:

  • Time Management
    • Calendaring
    • Prioritizing Projects
  • Finances
    • Reviewing the budget
    • Looking at future purchases
    • Finding ways to save money
    • Brainstomring ideas to make money

Family Well Being

This last section is probably the most important section in our mind and is probably the thing that most couples don’t prioritize on their to-do lists. (well besides the cooking)  We believe that being a couple weather you have kids or not; you are your own family unit, and you can’t spell family without the letter “I”.

This section focuses on the well being if you are familiar with Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs you know that at the bottom of the hierarchy there are survival such as eatings and shelter. Everything mentioned prior  to this category is good, but making sure these things and even social needs are just if not more important than you and your partner well being. Face it you can make all the house improvements you want but if you are tired, hungry, or not happy in your relationship home improvements and most to-do lists are going to do very little for you. In fact, we feel prioritizing fun and personal development are not just things to do when the honey-do list is done, but in ways that should be on the honey-do list to hit what Maslow ould call self-actualization or what we would hope to be as “couple actualization.”

Well-being is a big category and can mean a lot of different meanings and items.  Below is how we have chosen to break down this category. Again this is best of what we feel is best on focusing tasks around well-being for our couple and us as individuals.  Here are how we break down honey-do projects in this category.

  • Health ( Physical and Mental)
    • Cooking
    • Meal Planning
    • Exercising
  • Entertainment
    • Trips
    • Hobbies
    • Recreation
  • Goals
  • Relationships
    • Marriage
    • Extended Family
    • Friends
    • Parenting
  • Personal Development
    • Goals

After talking to many people and evaluating our relationships we feel you can categorize almost any honey-do project into one of these categories. Although we have been talking a lot about giving examples of honey-do liest categories it is important to remember a honey-do list is only as good as what you make of it. If you haven’t please go to our start here page and walkthrough some more definitions of a honey-do list and more importantly, honey-do list examples, and tips to complete your tasks.
