Learn How to Massage Your Partner Like a Pro at Home
Learning how to massage your partner can be something you can do on your own to give them a surprise or even take a couples massage course together as a date night. There are many different ways and reasons to learn how to give a massage, but we want you to feel like a pro. This article will explain how to give a massage in detail and help other couples in similar situations.
Before starting the “how” to learn to give your partner a massage, I want to tell you why behind this article. You see, although my partner has not had professional training, they are fantastic at giving massages, and frankly, it was intimidating to return the favor as much as I wanted to. So, I took the “cheap” way out and bought them a professional massage – and boy was it a lot of money, especially where we are trying to hit FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early).
As I did my research, I soon realized massages are good for the body if done correctly and regularly, but again that is a lot of money – which is something we currently don’t have a lot of. On the flip side, I think one should also enjoy life and still reap the health and relationship benefits of couple massage, and so my research began, and this is my best attempt to distill my hours of research to you.
Why you should learn to give massages to your partner
We all know the many benefits of receiving a massage, from relieving stress to reducing muscle tension. If the massage comes from your partner, it can strengthen your relationship in various ways. Here are five reasons you should learn to give your partner a massage.
- Build Confidence: Yes, this was a big one for me. I would get a great foot massage and then, in turn, be asked: “can I get one?”. Of course, I returned the favor, but I didn’t feel confident or comfortable until I took it upon myself to learn how to give a massage. Eventually, I talked with my partner about how I felt and wanted to overcome this lack of insecurity.
- Take your Marriage to the next level: This one does not need to be discussed a lot, but learning to be a good masseuse can be very romantic, and it can happen regularly.
- Save you money: Let’s face it, if you go to a chiropractor or massage therapist regularly, it will cost you a lot. Giving and getting a massage from your partner will save you direct costs for the massage and travel time. If you get into it, you may even get your massage supply kit or table, and it will be well worth it.
- Start a side hustle: If you start doing it enough, why not make some extra money on the side. Along with the savings, by not going to a massage therapist, you can start making a side income giving massages. There are tons of reasons to become a massage therapist. Here is an article with just a few.
- Help those around you: Lastly, we all have a close group of friends or kids that might get injured, and being able to give even a tiny therapeutic massage can be a great act of service.
I am sure there are other reasons you or someone else can come up with, but let’s get into the real purpose of this article and learn how to massage your partner at home. Learning does take time and practice, so if you need a shortcut, several massage alternatives may get you the desired result quicker than learning how to give a massage like a professional.
How to learn to give your partner a massage
There are lots of different ways to learn how to give a massage. Here are the main three we found:
- Youtube
- Live Classes
- Online Courses
Youtube:
Although not as hands-on, it is free. Youtube is where I started. You’ll have more of a learning curve than the others tailored to you with this type of learning. The key here would be to practice on your partner while watching the videos (or yourself if you want to surprise them and are that flexible) to better engage with the video and catch all the little details.
We enjoyed the following videos from Carrington College’s Youtube Channel:

My takeaways from these videos:
- Start and finish with long, flowing strokes. This encourages relaxation in the area being massaged and distributes the oil or lotion is used.
- Avoid putting pressure on bones. Pushing on bones can hurt! It also doesn’t do anything for the muscles being massaged.
- Move with your body. Use your whole body to give the best massage. Using just your arms or hands can lead to an uneven massage that won’t feel that great. Having your body flow with your movements will make everything smoother and more graceful.
- Be aware of too much pressure. Some people prefer a light massage, and some like their deep tissues being worked. Personally, I like a lighter one, while my partner likes being on the verge of tears being so deep. Each person will have different muscles’ tenderness and preferences with how deep they want their massage. Always be aware of flinching and ask what they would like.
Live Classes / Ask a Mentor
This one is a little hard to share since each location is different. Generally, you will have to find a massage school and take one of their courses. Not many massage therapists will have classes you can take. The cost of these classes ranges from about $50 to $200, depending on materials, location, and quality of training. Most of the time, it’s “get what you pay for.”
Online Courses
Online courses are great if you want to be in contact with a real professional and get advice from them. This is probably more for those who have seriously no idea what they are doing (yep, that’s me) or who want to impress their partner. There are some excellent links for online massage courses for couples below. These massage course costs range from free to about $1000 (and, of course, you get what you pay for).

The Takeaways
So, after all of this research, I have come to learn lots of things.
- Giving a massage is easier than you might think.
- There are many different types of massages out there, but even just mastering the simplest of techniques can make you seem like a pro.
- Third, and probably most important, giving it your best effort will significantly benefit your relationship whether or not you’re an actual pro. As long as you’re doing it for your partner, you’re already.
