6 Tips on How to Wash Windows
Washing windows never seems like a task that is going to take all day but once you get started you realize that it does take all day because you want to get rid of the streaks, you have to wash the inside and outside, and you get tired because lets face it holding your arms up and spraying and wiping is not something most of us do on a regular basis.
Here are our best tips and step by step process for washing your windows like a pro.
Tip 1:
Use what the pros use.
You will really need three things to wash your windows like a professional.
- A squeegee. You can buy a squeegee at almost any janitorial supply place, Home Depot, Lowe’s, or online at Amazon. This squeegee is our personal favorite. They do come in different sizes, we recommend a 10 to 12 in. squeegee. This will due for most of your window washing needs.
- A scrubber or sponge. We suggest using a soft window scrubber or soft sponge. Be careful because you don’t want it to scratch your windows. Here is what we recommend. You can also buy a combo squeegee/scrubber to help save some bucks while completing your Honey Do List.
- A lint free cotton rag or microfiber towel. This is a must! After each stroke of the squeegee, you will want to wipe it on your towel to remove soap, dirt, and water so that you maintain a streak-free shine on your windows.
Below are the squeegee and scrubber sponge we recommend:
Step 1
Mix a couple gallons of water with about a teaspoon of dish soap. The dish soap helps trap dirt and clean grime while also helping the squeegee easily glide across the glass.
Tip 2
Some people like to add a little vinegar to their window washing concoction to help bust through the hard water that can stick to your windows from rain and sprinklers. If you are mixing 2 gallons of water and a teaspoon of soap, then add about a cup of vinegar to help remove hard water.
Step 2
Wet your window scrubber with your window washing solution and wring it out so it is wet but not dripping. Use your scrubber to gently wash the window.
Tip 3
If your windows have a lot of dirt on them try spraying them off with a hose first. Removing clumps of dirt and debris will ensure you don’t scratch your windows while cleaning them off.
Step 4
Using the corner of your squeegee or a corner of your towel wipe clean one edge and the top of the window, just a small section of it. This will leave you a clean area to start your squeegee, this is important, so you do not have streaks.
Step 5
Place the edge of your squeegee on the clean edge and gently drag it across the window. When you start on the second row overlap with the freshly cleaned stripe about 2 inches. Do this until finishing the entire pane.
Tip 4
Wipe your squeegee blade after each stroke on your microfiber towel.
Step 6
Wipe all edges with your microfiber towel
Repeat these steps for each window. When washing your inside windows makes sure to remove most of the water from the scrubber to prevent dripping on wood finishes, walls, and in the track of the window.
